character babies, circa 1918

From the begining of the XXth century, doll makers created more realistic dolls. In Gerrmany, as well as in France, character babies were fashionable. Babies with curved legs and a new born looking face were very popular at that time too.
In 1899, the main French doll makers joined to create a unique company the SFBJ (Société Française de fabrication de Bébés et Jouets) in order to compete against the foreign competition and mainly the German one.
The new SFBJ production is outstanding for the exceptional series of character babies with expressive faces and child or even new born bodies.

Mignonnette in La Poupée Modèle's cardboard setting, 1880
|
During the 1870's the pocket doll concept developped in Europe. Miniature dolls, or mignonnettes already existed but no doll maker really had a trade startegy to sell these mini dolls.
The pocket dolls sold by La Poupée Modèle magazine under the name of Mignonnette are a perfect model for sewing. The magazin published patterns and cardboard sheets for these tiny dolls.
